If you’re buying, selling, or receiving a firearm in Florida, chances are you’ll encounter the term FFL transfer. But what does it mean—and when do you need one?
At Florida Pawn & Gun, we help gun owners navigate this important part of responsible firearm ownership with clarity and confidence. Whether you’re making a private sale, purchasing online, or handling an inherited collection, here’s what you need to know.

What Is an FFL Transfer?
An FFL (Federal Firearms License) transfer is the legal process of moving a firearm from one owner to another through a licensed dealer—like Florida Pawn & Gun. It’s a safeguard that ensures both parties comply with federal and state laws.
When a transfer is done through an FFL, we perform a background check (via NICS), handle all required documentation, and keep proper records of the transaction.

When Is an FFL Transfer Required?
Here are common situations when an FFL transfer is required or strongly recommended:
- Online Firearm Purchases: If you buy a gun from an online retailer or auction site (like GunBroker), the firearm must be shipped to a licensed FFL dealer in your state for legal transfer.
- Private Party Sales (In Some Cases): While Florida does not currently require background checks for private sales, using an FFL adds protection and peace of mind.
- Gifting or Inheriting Firearms: Transferring ownership—even as a gift or inheritance—can benefit from a legal record. This is especially true for estates, out-of-state transfers, or if you’re unsure of the recipient’s eligibility.
- Out-of-State Transfers: Any firearm being shipped across state lines must go through an FFL.
